Have you heard of the new app Threads? If not, where have you been? Despite only launching today, the hype surrounding this new app built by Instagram’s parent company, Meta has been ongoing for some time.
Meta has diversified its social media offerings greatly with the introduction of the new app, which has been brought to life as a way to expand the offering from connecting with photos and videos to text. The new app has been dubbed as Twitter’s newest competitor, having been released shortly after restrictions to the number of tweets that could be read each day were announced. By allowing users to share real-time text updates and join conversations about the things they care about, as well as trending topics, Threads is set to be an app to encourage user creativity.
Here at eclipse, we’ve been excited to see the launch of Threads and were keen to dive straight in to see how we can use it and best apply it to our clients and their marketing strategies. So, with so much to get through, let’s take a look at Threads and how it could be incorporated into your marketing strategy.
How do you join Threads?
Joining Threads has been made super easy, with users being able to copy over every feature of their existing Instagram profiles, including their username, profile images, verification, and who they follow. Straight away, this poses a great benefit to organisations and brands, as their audience will likely follow them onto the app, creating a new and exciting platform for even more engaging content.
What features are available?
Threads have several features that you should be aware of, but we’ll start by sharing the most important: you can include links, up to 10 photos, and videos up to 5 minutes in length, with a maximum character limit of 500 (a lot more than Twitter’s limit of 280). It’s also handy to note that you can share content from Threads to your own Instagram Story or Feed, opening up even more channels for conversation across multidimensional platforms.
Users can still like, repost and reply to a thread, and the user experience is reported to be intuitive, with a sleek, easy-to-read feed. However, one big difference in the app is that Threads doesn’t appear to use hashtags. Hashtags have become synonymous with social media over the years, allowing marketers to categorise their content, keep it relevant and get it in front of the right people. It’s interesting to see a platform forgo their use, especially as it’s unknown if they will be added to the platform in the future, and we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for any updates.
Currently, your feed will include posts from people and accounts you follow on Instagram and Threads, as well as recommendations for content you’ve not yet discovered, which can be fantastic for not only inspiration but for customers to discover new brands like yours who are talking about the things that matter to them.
Meta has stated that they will be rolling out several new features to help users continue their discovery on Threads, including improved feed recommendations and an improved search function so you can follow topics and trends in real time. We’re excited to see how the app develops and how users engage!
Where do Threads fit into your marketing strategy?
Joining Threads sooner rather than later could have expediential benefits if you’re looking to use it to promote your brand. As more and more users join the platform (surpassing 5 million users within 4 hours of launching!) it provides a new chance to establish your brand’s visibility and develop a following. Thanks to its link to Instagram, its instant networking capability means you’re likely to see growth on Threads quickly if you’re already sharing engaging content. However, knowing where to start with a new social media platform can be challenging, so while users and creators explore the app and develop an understanding of it and how to use it, it’s worth asking users what type of content users want to see.
