An 8-week Mindfulness in the workplace course, perhaps not the first thing that comes to mind when you think of employee training and development. However, for 1 hour a week that is exactly what the eclipse team is doing.
What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness is the ability for a person to be fully present and aware of what they are doing. Through developing this sense of self-awareness learn not to be overly reactive or overwhelmed by what is going on around them. We often find that our minds will veer from a task at hand and we lose touch with our body to become engrossed in thoughts. Mindfulness is there to snap us back to where we are and what we are doing and feeling.
What are the benefits to the eclipse team?
With a growing appreciation that mental health can have just as much of an impact as physical health. Even on the best days, stress can prevent us from being fully focused and doing our best work. And too much of it can lead to burnout, disengagement, sick days and conflict within the workplace.
Mindfulness training gives our minds an opportunity to take a break. Using the exercises that we are learning we can better identify what our mind and body is feeling. When we’re mindful, we reduce stress, enhance performance, gain insight and awareness through observing our own mind, and increase our attention to others’ well-being.
In the wake of Covid 19 and with everyone working from home it is also helpful to look after the well-being of staff when it can be a bit harder to check in on how everyone is doing. Zoom calls can be impersonal and it can be harder to spot when one of your colleagues is struggling. So equipping our team with the skills to recognise problems that they are facing and address the issues is of great benefit.
As we approach the halfway mark on the Mindfulness in the workplace course, we are already seeing the benefits and look forward to the sessions still to come!
