Magento, one of the world’s most popular e-commerce content management systems, has announced that they will be retiring support for Magento 1 by June 2020. Here’s what that will mean for your Magento 1 store as well as what you need to do next.
What does this mean?
The main issue in all of this is what Magento ending support for the platform actually means. In short, it means that any sites running on the Magento 1 platform will no longer receive software updates, security patches or quality fixes. This, therefore, leaves your site open to attack from hackers and cybercriminals.
As well as this, your site’s quality may begin to deteriorate. You will start to notice extension glitches and errors, and eventually, this could render your site unusable. In order to avoid a data breach or site crash, you will need to upgrade your CMS or consider switching to another platform.
Choosing to upgrade
As a solution, you could choose to upgrade your site to Magento 2. This is (as the name may suggest) the new, faster, improved version of Magento 1 – a good option for those of you who are already familiar with the Magento user interface. However, this option also comes with a few downsides.
First off, Magento haven’t provided any way of syncing your content from one version of the platform to another, and so you will essentially have to start all over again. This is also true for any extensions you may have added to your site and may even incur extra costs.
Themes that were available on Magento 1 are also not available on the new CMS, which means that you will have to build your site’s theme from scratch in order for it to retain its appearance throughout the migration.
Choosing a new CMS
With all the work of upgrading your site, you may find it just the same amount of effort to transfer your site to a new platform entirely. There is a plethora of choice available to suit the needs of e-commerce sites big and small, so with a little research, you might even be able to find a platform that better fits the requirements of your store.
